How to Care for and Store Your PrimePutt Mat Year-Round

One of the questions I get asked most often by golfers who've invested in a quality putting mat is: "How do I keep this thing in great shape?" It's a fair question. You've made a smart investment in your game, and you want it to last.

Here's the good news: if you've chosen a PrimePutt mat, you've already done the hard part. These mats are built with tour-grade nylon turf and engineered to handle serious use without the fuss. But like any piece of quality golf equipment, a little care goes a long way.

The Beauty of Low Maintenance

After nearly three decades in this industry, I've seen every type of practice surface imaginable. Some require constant brushing, vacuuming, or even ironing to maintain their roll. Others start showing wear after just a few months of regular use.

What sets PrimePutt apart is its no-maintenance design. The mat rolls at 10-12 on the Stimpmeter right out of the box, and it stays that way. You don't need to brush it. You don't need to vacuum it weekly. You don't need any special treatments.

That said, if you're someone who likes to keep things pristine (and I get it, I'm the same way), an occasional light vacuum to remove dust or debris won't hurt. But it's not required for performance. The mat will putt true whether you vacuum it or not.

Storage Made Simple

This is where PrimePutt really shines. I've worked with students who've struggled with felt mats that wrinkle, foam surfaces that crease, and cheap turf that never quite lays flat again after being rolled up.

PrimePutt's design eliminates all of that frustration. The mat has no memory. Roll it up, tuck it under a bed or in a closet, and when you pull it out next time, it lays perfectly flat. No tape needed. No weights required. No waiting for it to "settle."

The rubber backing keeps it stable on any surface, whether you're putting on hardwood, carpet, or tile. Just unroll it and you're ready to practice.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Use

Here's something that surprises many golfers: PrimePutt mats use durable materials, often the same as those found in heavy-duty outdoor golf mats. That means you absolutely can use your mat outside.

I've had students set them up on patios, in garages, even on actual grass for short-game practice sessions. The durability is there.

However, if you want your mat to last for years (and I mean many years), I recommend storing it indoors when you're not using it. Extended exposure to harsh weather, intense UV rays, or standing water can eventually take a toll on any material, no matter how well-made.

Think of it like your favorite wedge. Sure, you could leave it outside in the rain, but why would you?

Dealing with Pets and Kids

One of the most common concerns I hear is: "Will my dog ruin this thing?" or "Can my kids play on it?"

The answer is yes, it can handle both. PrimePutt mats are designed to be used and abused. The nylon turf is incredibly durable, far more so than the carpet or felt alternatives you'll find elsewhere.

I've seen these mats survive my enthusiastic furry friend and teenagers who treat every putt like they're trying to win the Masters. They hold up remarkably well.

The Long Game

At the end of the day, caring for your PrimePutt mat is about respecting your investment in your game. Roll it out when you're ready to practice. Roll it up when you're done. Store it somewhere dry. That's really all there is to it.

After 17 years of coaching and countless hours watching students improve their putting, I can tell you this: the golfers who practice consistently on quality surfaces are the ones who see real improvement. And when your practice tool is this easy to care for, there's no excuse not to use it.

Your short game will thank you.
